Witness statements in the UK High Court appeal by the Sunday Times to publish extracts from Richard Tomlinson’s book, The Big Breach, are available at Cryptome. The silent halls of the British intelligence establishment caving in on them?

Publish And Be Damned

Baen Publishers are urging their writers to put their books on the Net. For free. Their logic being that it’s the same as giving away books for publicity purposes, only more cost-effective. I applaud them for embracing the traditional spirit of the Net, but might also point out that usually promotional copies of new books are given to people with influence who would not otherwise buy these books. The people most likely to be downloading the books off the Net will be people with relatively low influence, and who would likely have bought the book in the first place. A much better scheme would be to do time-limited promotions, offering a pre-publishing download and then cutting off. The underground trade in now “illicit” copies will do much more for sales.

Porn Again

I found Patricia Nell Warren’s comments to the National Academy of Science workshop on online porn highly insightful. If only her astoundingly level-headed view could be shared by more people, especially those in power.

News as you’ve never seen it before: beautiful anchors, stripping while they deliver the highlights. Only featuring female anchors at the moment, though, so Ted Koppel and Wolf Blitzer fans might want to wait a while.

Insecure Security

“Perfect security requires a level of perfection that simply doesn’t exist, and in fact isn’t likely to ever exist.” Should that be read as an admission of guilt from Microsoft?

Crime Time

A hacker may have stolen several million credit card numbers off the Egghead website, a crime considered the largest of its kind ever. Just imagine someone skimming millions of dollars off millions of credit card accounts, a few cents at a time… wait a minute, haven’t Visa and Mastercard been doing this for years?
