British defence secretary John Reid would like to see the Geneva conventions and other international laws swept aside to fight “an enemy which obeys no rules whatsoever”. A reasonable demand, if we keep in mind that previous enemies were generally decent chaps with a clear sense of fair play. The current laws, according to Reid, hamper the UK’s ability to mistreat prisoners and attack countries without clear provocation.
In addition, I would like to add to Reid’s list laws against rape, which hamper population growth, and laws against theft, which clearly stop the fair (and economically stimulating) flow of luxury goods from the rich to the poor.
Perhaps all of this is just a misunderstanding, and the mass media have confused John Reid, a fine upstanding man dedicated to British justice and international law, with Richard Reid, a murderous barbarian and fanatic with no regard for his fellow man.
